无色或白色针状或棒状结晶体，工业或农业品为白色略带微红色固体颗粒，有刺鼻性气味。含氮量约为46.67%。密度1.335g/cm3。熔点132.7℃。溶于水、醇，难溶于乙醚、氯仿。呈弱碱性。尿素能有效的使蛋白质变性，尤其能有效地破坏非共价键结合的蛋白质。这特点可以提高某些蛋白质的可溶性，其浓度可达10摩尔/体积。尿素也可用来制造硝酸尿素。
