OLED Materials
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED): A typical OLED (see the figure below) is composed of an emissive layer, a conductive layer, a substrate, and anode and cathode terminals. The layers are made of organic molecules that conduct electricity. The layers have conductivity levels ranging from insulators to conductors, so OLEDs are considered organic semiconductors. In OLED, a current of electrons flows through the electrodes. The cathode gives electrons to the emissive layer and the anode gives holes to the conductive layer. Soon, the electrons and the holes recombine, accompanied by an emission of light whose wavelength is in the visible region. That is how an OLED unit works.
OLED technology is used in applications such as small screens for mobile phones and portable digital audio players (MP3 players), car radios, digital cameras, and high-resolution microdisplays for head-mounted displays. Another exciting OLED application is white lighting source, which has been considered a revolution of new high-efficiency green light source.
